If your focus currently lasts only 10–15 minutes, that’s okay. You can train your mind to focus for longer by studying or working for one focused hour using these simple steps:
1. Write Your To-Dos
List all your tasks — big, small, important, or not-so-important. Then pick one task you’d like to start with based on your mood, priority, or urgency. There’s no right or wrong choice, the goal is simply to build momentum.
2. Keep Your Phone Out of Reach
Turn off the internet on your phone and keep it out of reach — in your bag, drawer, locked in cupboard or with a colleague/family member.
3. On Desktop Block Distractions
Turn off notifications for frequent notification platforms like Slack, Gmail, and WhatsApp, or close these apps. Install BlockSite to stop yourself from opening distracting sites like Reddit, News, LinkedIn or YouTube.
4. Play Focus Music
Put on some soft instrumental Western or Hindustani classical music at low volume. It helps you to be in flow.
5. Act on Urges Wisely
Every 10–15 minutes, you might feel like checking your phone or taking a random break. Instead, take a few deep breaths, stretch, do some calf raises, or drink water. The idea is to not act on the urge and let it pass and then return to your work.
